CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
Phaedra stood at the rear of her attack force. They numbered almost two hundred in all, by far the largest attack force ever assembled by the Raxion Empire since their initial invasion of the planet itself. Magrieot had told her to use any means at her disposal and she meant to put down this rebellion with a categorical victory. Even without the use of The Fear, the superior weaponry of this fighting force could take on a human army three times its size. Considering the ragtag survivors the rebels had left in their pathetic stronghold, her troops would face nothing close to that number. The real challenge would be decimating the rebels without killing the boy.
She had the foot soldiers disembark before arriving at the rebel camp, planning to launch an air strike followed by her ground forces. The move turned out to be a stroke of luck, for it seemed the rebels had come out to meet them head on. Her troops would ensure none of them could scatter and escape her ships. This would truly be a battle to remember, and the end of all their rebel woes.
âHow many do you estimate are hiding in that rubble field?â Phaedra turned and offered her long-range optics to Lask. He took them and peered ahead at the wide outcropping of rocks just below a rise on the horizon.
âHard to say. There isnât enough cover for more than a hundred humans, but I doubt they have that many rebels in their entire camp. The slope behind them is a good place to hide reinforcements, however. If I were to choose a place to make a stand, this would be as good as any. They have good cover and high ground.â
Phaedra turned her eyes back to the rock field ahead of them. âWell, letâs not keep them waiting. Send in the airships for a close-range assault, then weâll advance our troops to mop up.â
Lask issued the order on his comm unit and the two attack ships hovering high overhead swooped down and streaked past. Phaedra watched as they closed in and settled on the right and left flanks of the battlefield, forming a kill-box in the middle. It seemed almost boring that the rebels would be routed so easily. Here or at the camp, the story would be the same. The rebels possess neither the numbers nor the technology to stand up to the Raxions. It was a travesty that they had been allowed to survive as long as they did.
Phaedra had already turned away when the first blast shook the ground. A hiss and then the sound of death and destruction. When the second blast sounded Lask placed a hand on her shoulder to turn her back toward the battlefield. Her back went stiff as her eyes took in the scene, filling her with a white-hot rage that sent her rasping tentacles into spastic motion.
A surface to air projectile of some sort hissed from the ground into the sky and struck the aft stabilizer of the Rax attack ship, rocking it to the side with another explosion.
